Find a program - This link shows which colleges and universities in Washington are approved to offer teacher preparation program (and which endorsements each program offers). However, please be aware that these colleges might not offer every endorsement program that they are authorized to offer every year.
If you are interested in pursuing an alternative route to certification, additional information on alternative routes (including a link to current providers) is available by clicking here.
If you are interested in completing an out-of-state or online teacher preparation program, you will want to make sure that the program you select meets all of the requirements for certification in Washington. Namely, you will want to ensure that the program is "state approved" and that you will be able to earn an endorsement that aligns with at least one of the areas recognized by Washington State.
Please note that “state approved” does not simply mean that the program leads to a certificate that is recognized by a state, but specifically that the program has received official approval from the appropriate state agency that reviews and approves education programs leading to certification. This distinction can be confusing and complicated, so if you are looking to attend an out-of-state program, you will want to contact the state agency responsible for approving preparation programs in your program’s state to make sure that your program is state approved. You can find a comprehensive list of these agencies by clicking here.
It is also important to note that if you complete an out-of-state program, you will be considered an “out-of-state applicant” even if you are a Washington State resident and will need to follow out-of-state application procedures. For more information, please review our Out-of-state Transfers page. If you have remaining questions, please contact the OSPI Certification Office at firstname.lastname@example.org or (360) 725-6400.
