Bilingual Educators Initiative

This grant application is now closed and applications are currently under review. Thank you for your interest.

The Recruiting Washington Teachers - Bilingual Educators Initiative (RWT - BEI) Pilot Project is aimed at recruiting, preparing, and mentoring bilingual high school students, in order to prepare them to become future bilingual teachers and counselors in the state of Washington. Through a competitive grant application process, pilot sites (with a minimum of one site east and one site west of the Cascades) will be created. Much like the original pilot program, these sites will act as learning laboratories, through which PESB can develop best practices and resources to share across the state--growing-our-own future bilingual educators from our classrooms. Bilingual teacher academies are possible without state funding, thus with this funding comes additional responsibilities.

The RWT - BIE grant is a two-year-long award, with the 2017-2018 school year to be used as a planning and development year, if needed. Districts, or district consortium, selected by the Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) must partner with at least one two-year and one four-year college in planning and implementing the program (community colleges offering a bachelors of applied science would not require an additional partner), at least one of which is authorized to operate as a teacher preparation program in the State of Washington. Partnerships with Alternative Routes to Certification programs are strongly encouraged.

Bilingual Initiative classes will be taught using the Recruiting Washington Teachers curriculum which emphasizes the importance of cultural identity and equity in the profession of teaching.
