The curriculum features five thematic units, including Healthy Learning Community, Culture and Identity, Equity and Opportunity, Equity Pedagogy, and College Access and Success. Units are presented in an Understanding by Design (UbD) format that identifies desired outcomes linked to performance-based assessments that require students to integrate and apply content and skills developed throughout the unit. Each unit identifies essential questions, enduring understandings, content and skills targets, and then provides a sequence of learning events that lead to the performance- based assessments. Three sets of standards are embedded across these units, Common Core English Language Arts, 21st Century, and Washington State New Teacher Benchmarks, and are identified within each unit. An additional section titled Guided Inquiry: Theory into Practice, includes resources to support students to observe, reflect and apply theory to their own experiences.
